Is Your Silverware Sterling? A Quick Guide

Is Your Silverware Sterling? A Quick Guide

That beautiful silver flatware set you inherited or found at an antique store – is it truly sterling silver? Knowing the difference between plated silver and genuine sterling can significantly impact its value. Here's a simple guide to help you determine if your silverware is the real deal.

1. Look for Hallmarks:

This is the most reliable way to identify sterling silver. Sterling silver items are typically marked with specific hallmarks. Common hallmarks include:

  • "Sterling" or "Ster": This is the most straightforward indicator.

  • "925": This number signifies that the piece is 92.5% pure silver, the standard for sterling silver.

2. Check for Weight and Feel:

Sterling silver is denser and heavier than silver-plated items. If your flatware feels substantial in your hand, it's a good sign. Silver-plated items, on the other hand, often feel lighter and less solid.

3. Examine the Appearance:

Sterling silver develops a natural patina over time, a warm, soft glow. Silver-plated items, when worn, may reveal a base metal underneath, often copper or brass, which will have a different color. If you see areas where a different metal is showing through, it is plated.

4. The Magnet Test (Less Reliable):

Silver is not magnetic. If a strong magnet sticks to your flatware, it's likely not sterling silver. However, this test isn't foolproof, as some silver-plated items may also be non-magnetic.

5. The Sound Test:

When you gently tap sterling silver, it produces a long, ringing tone. Silver plated items will make more of a dull thud. This test takes practice, and is not always conclusive.

6. Acid Testing (Use Caution):

This method involves applying a small drop of acid to an inconspicuous area of the flatware. If the acid reacts in a certain way, it can indicate sterling silver. However, this test can damage your items, so it's best left to professionals.

What if it's Silver Plated?

Silver plated items have very little silver content. We are not able to purchase them.
